"Productive families and capable mothers:
Un/deservingness in Hungarian family policy"

(Research: Marta Baski, Violetta Zentai)

The project specifically investigates the re-organisation of family policy in Hungary in the aftermath of Victor Orbán's regime take-off in 2010. These policies promote "proper" family patterns and practices by endorsing ethnonationalist and gender-conservative framings of un/deservingness and redistribute welfare benefits and resources accordingly. The research will examine the production of the ideals and practices of middle-class households awarded tax benefits and mortgage support in contrast to disadvantaged, typically Roma, low-educated, and precarious women, and women (often divorced/single parents) caring for elderly, disabled, and sick family members.
