Moralisations-of-Inequality

"Un/deserving of solidarity:
tax and welfare reform in Austria"

(Research: Andreas Streinzer)

The subproject investigates the deservingness arena of redistribution in Austria in the aftermath of recent socio-economic reforms (tax reform and reform of minimum social entitlements). The project investigates how relatively privileged and relatively unprivileged groups are affected by and attempt to act on the distributional outcomes of these reforms. The ethnographic entry points will be Vienna and Tyrol, differing according to economic structure and modes of political organisation. Productivist moralisations will be specifically important for exploring taxation and social welfare, such as the hard-working achiever (Leistungsträger), the greedy tax sinner (Steuersünder), the small-home builder (Häuslbauer), or the scrounger (Schnorrer) lying in the social hammock (Soziale Hängematte).
